THE BIG LIE

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the state can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the state to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the state.”

Touching letter from Bersih 2.0 participant to his daughters

709 - A Letter from Daddy

15 July 2011

Dearest Bam, Shu, Moo and Loosh,

After reading many of the mainstream media reports on last Saturday's event - 709, I feel compelled to write this letter to you.

You probably remember how, some days earlier, Grandma had been instigating all of you including Mummy to persuade or sweet talk me into not going. You must have been wondering why she was so nervous about a 'walk'. I was asked time and again, "Di Di (my nickname), you are a father of four young daughters; why must you do such a thing?"

My plan to go had constantly changed following the twists and turns of events. I had booked a hotel and cancelled it and booked another one. I had planned to go by car, by bus, by plane and finally decided to go by train one day earlier.

So, on 709, your daddy was there.

I met many 'unfamiliar' friends - pakciks, makciks, aunties, uncles, young women and men, teenagers, children and even the handicapped. It was just like a carnival, as commented by one of my friends.

It was fascinating to see the group we were in swell before my eyes, as if these people appeared out of thin air. With the whole area meticulously sealed off, how did so many people come? I suppose, some just like we did. It is most intriguing how the people finally gathered.

In front of Maybank, our numbers steadily grew. We seemed to feed on each others' strength. We cheered, we chanted, we waved to LRT trains passing by and we sang the national anthem. It was exhilarating.

Next to an old lady holding yellow chrysanthemums was a man holding a yellow balloon. How harmless and peaceful can you get? The peace was shattered by the police when they struck, shooting tear gas and chemicalized water cannons directly towards us. A big group of us was forced on to Jalan Pudu before we realized that we were trapped in between. The front was totally blocked off and behind the police were chasing and arresting people while rounds and rounds of tear gas were mercilessly fired. Ironically, in the mayhem, I felt a sense of harmony with my fellow Malaysians that I had never felt before. Malaysians were looking out for one another during the police attack, sharing salt, water, words of encouragement and arms to lean on ...

I was attacked by the tear gas four times and the worst was the last one when I could not go anywhere or do anything but sit and endure it, covering my whole head with my wet T-shirt. My eyes felt as if they had been splashed with acid, I was coughing and gagging, my skin crawled with burning sensations and I thought I was going to suffocate ... It was probably one of the worst experiences, saddened as I was by the actions of the police whose responsibility was to protect the rakyat. However, though by that time I was separated from all my friends, I was very encouraged by those suffering alongside me.

When things were settling down, my friends and I were re-united in the hotel lobby. One out of the eight of us had been arrested.

Reflecting on the experience, I was ever more hopeful of the future of our nation - the young Malaysians. I recalled the young engineer travelling with us who had approached me on his own initiative and said, "It's important to go." I recalled the young man studying and working in Singapore who flew in and stayed with me in the hotel room. I recalled the young girl suffering with me under attack by the tear gas, ill-prepared in her skirt and sleeveless T-shirt, who had woken up that morning, taken a bus and come, without the knowledge of her parents. I recalled the young lawyer who also stayed with me in the hotel room and told us that about 200 young people from his group had come to march. I recalled another young man who had argued with his parents, insisting on coming and on seeing me said, "I am surprised people of your age would also come." I recalled a young Malay man who came towards me, patted my back, probably seeing me in my most wretched and miserable moment. They have been an inspiration and one reason why I am very hopeful of the future of Malaysia.

If I was asked just to share one thing about 709, it would be this as related to me by one of my friends:

"As we marched together, one elderly Malay gentleman turned to me. Looking into my Chinese eyes, he said - This is the real 1 Malaysia!"

The more than 50,000 there were one people.

My story is only one among 50,000 stories but threading the 50,000 stories together is only one theme.

Let me answer the question Grandma asked:

709 has nothing to do with any political party nor individual. 709 has everything to do with the people of Malaysia. 709 has everything to to do with the future of Malaysia. 709 has everything to do with you, my dear ones, and therefore, Daddy was there and very proud of it.

Kisses

Daddy

In the eyes of some Danish

"A CITIZEN NEEDS TO REGISTER TO VOTE??!!"

Last week, I met a very friendly Danish couple and their young adult daughter over a lovely dinner. When we got to dessert, the conversation led to Malaysia, our democracy, and voting system.

Danish Mum: *shock on her face* You need to register to vote???

Danish Dad: *another shocked expression* Isn't it automatic as I understand every Malaysian citizen has an identity card?

Danish 19-yr old: *confused look* After my 18th birthday, I received a letter telling me I am now eligible to vote. In school, I was taught that it is very important to vote. I cannot understand why a citizen should need to register when it is a citizen's right and if so, why doesn't every Malaysian just go and register when they can?

Imagine how dumbfounded I was at their queries. Dumbfounded and a little embarrassed. All I could utter sheepishly was "this is the Election Commission's process".

I think I've said enough. Please register to vote.

(Resource: http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v5/newspolitic.php?id=510854)

Aiya, my vote is only one vote what!

During every registration drive, I'm told by at least 15-20 people, "My one vote makes no difference la". We have on average 6 drives in a month, so I would have encountered 120 people every month who don't think they can make a difference with their singular vote. Note that this is from only ONE location.

If one volunteer from one location meets 120 eligible non-voters;
one volunteer from ten locations would meet 1200 eligible non-voters!!!

The Hulu Selangor and Sibu by election were won by BN and PR with a margin of 1,725 and 398 votes respectively. If all the unregistered voters in these two constituents believed they could make a difference and came out to vote, don't you think the outcome would have been very different???

Don't you remember the tale told to us when we were young about how its easy to break one pencil in half, but its hard to break a bunch of pencil in half?

UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL.
Each and every vote makes a difference because collectively, we have the power to determine the fate of our future generations.

4 Million unregistered voters.
4 Million chances to make a difference.

Are we going backwards instead of forward?

"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government".
Patrick Henry (1736 - 1799)
Advocate of the American Revolution

Maybe Patrick Henry's words were a little too harsh especially the use of the word "restrain", but the principle of his thoughts back in the 18th century are on the right track. The Federal Constitution provides us, the citizens, with a right to choose and elect a competent government; whilst at the same time, provide rules and regulations on how the government is supposed to lead the nation with a duty of care.

If Patrick Henry could understand this principle 230 years ago, why are there 4,000,000 (YES, 4 MILLION) un-registered eligible voters in Malaysia who do not understand this?

If you are one of the 4 million people out there, PLEASE REGISTER TO VOTE.

Why Should I Vote?

This is perhaps the most common question asked by an eligible but unregistered voter. It is nearly impossible to answer this question as everyone votes for a different reason. However, the principle of voting is to UPHOLD DEMOCRACY, where WE THE CITIZENS have the right to STEER THE NATION into a positive direction which benefits each and every one of us, irregardless of gender, race or religion.

Before asking "Why should I vote?", try asking yourself these two very simple questions:-

Am I happy about how my country is being run?

Do I want my children and future generations to continue living in this country?

If your answer is YES, then give your current representative a pat on the back and continue voting for him/her.

If your answer is NO, then choose a representative whom you believe can make a change on your behalf.

So this is why you should vote.
Your VOTE is YOUR VOICE.
You VOTE to MAKE YOUR DECISION HEARD.

P/S: If your answer to the above questions are "I DON'T KNOW", then open your eyes and ears. With knowledge, you will get an answer.

Formal Introductions

As is customary with every first encounters, formal introductions are in order. Well, here goes:-

Hi, we're Jpag. We are a group of men and women who share one common ground, where we believe each and every citizen of Malaysia should exercise their right to vote as provided in the Federal Constitution. Our unwavering passion led us to band together to raise voters' awareness by organizing voters' registration drives across Johor Bahru and hopefully, across Johor in the near future. We stress that we are a neutral, non-partisan group whose only goal is to encourage voters to exercise their right in determining the future of our country and we will strive to educate the public towards a fair and merit-based society.

As you continue to read our blog, we hope you yourself are, or will become, a registered voter.

And if you would like to go that extra mile, do join us as we could always use more volunteers.
